PIER FISHING VARIES FROM HIGH SPEED TO ALMOST STALLED ON COAST

Pier fishing along the Dare Coast was fairly good at some locations and slow at others Friday.

Kitty Hawk Pier reported a slow day with a few spot and sea mullet landed.

On Avalon Pier, a few Spanish mackerel and bluefish were taken from the end of the pier off and on throughout the day.

Anglers on Nags Head Pier caught black drum weighing up to 6 pounds, a few spot, croaker and albacore. A handful of Spanish mackerel and bluefish were landed off the end of the pier.

Good numbers of spot were taken from Jennette's Pier during the afternoon. Some nice-sized Spanish mackerel were also landed from the end of the pier on jiggers.

Fishermen on Outer Banks Pier caught fair numbers of spot and sea mullet. A few nice Spanish mackerel also were landed.

On Hatteras Island, Rodanthe Pier reported slow fishing with a few bottom fish and Spanish mackerel taken.

A few bluefish and an 11-1/2-pound albacore were caught from Avon Pier during the morning. Afternoon action was slow.

On Frisco Pier, anglers landed a few flounders during the day.

Surf fishermen along the northern beaches caught some small bottom fish and tailor blues.

Nice-sized bluefish, keeper flounder and several puppy drum were beached by surf casters on the north side of Oregon Inlet. Fishermen on the inlet's south side caught bottom fish and flounder.

Plenty of spot were landed in the surf from Rodanthe to Buxton.

A few puppy drum were beached at Cape Point. Along the beach north of the Point Keeper, flounders and a few black drum were landed.

Plenty of tailor blues and small flounders were caught in the surf around Hatteras Inlet Friday. The best action in the area has been at night.

Inshore trolling for bluefish was good around Oregon Inlet. Headboats in the area reported good catches of pigfish and flounder.

Yellowfin tuna fishing was good off Oregon Inlet around the 40500 Loran Line line. Another hot spot was between the 40750 and the 40800 in 28 fathoms of water. The yellowfin ranged in size from 20 to 90 pounds. Billfish and dolphin were scarce.

Wahoo fishing continued good off Hatteras but not as hot as on previous days. A few dolphin an some large tuna were also landed. A white marlin and a sailfish were released by Walt Spruill's Hatteras Fever.

Blue marlin were released by the Tuna Duck and the Hatteras Fever.

The water temperature was 72 degrees Friday at the Army Corps of Engineers Pier in Duck and 73 degrees at Frisco Pier on Hatteras Island. by CNB
