Essex Savings completes

sale of branches to CENIT

Essex Bancorp Inc., the Virginia Beach-based thrift holding company, said its Essex Savings Bank subsidiary completed the sale of four branches and $63 million of deposits to CENIT Bank. The branches are in Norfolk, Portsmouth, Hampton and Newport News. Essex said it expects to close on the sale of a branch in Grafton, along with $5 million, to Norfolk-based CENIT later this year. These transactions will leave Essex Savings with about $122 million of deposits and branches in Suffolk, Emporia, Richmond and Elizabeth City, N.C., the company said. (Staff)

Austrian company urged

to use Virginia ports

Virginia Gov. George F. Allen on Friday urged an Austrian company to increase its use of Virginia ports. Allen met with executives of Eurostar, a joint venture by Chrysler and an Austrian auto company manufacturing minivans for the European market. Eurostar imports more than 18,000 containers of auto parts annually from the United States. More than half of those containers are shipped through Virginia ports. A one-third increase in production will offer more opportunities for parts shipments through Virginia's ports, he said. (AP) by CNB
