SOME POLICE OFFICERS GIVEN PROMOTIONS AS OTHERS RETIRE

Several veteran officers of the Portsmouth Police Department received promotions and five others retired recently at a Promotion/Retirement Ceremony held Sept. 11.

Catherine L. Conners was promoted to lieutenant. Conners joined the department in 1980 and was promoted in 1993 to the rank of sergeant.

She currently is assigned to Uniform Patrol midnight shift as shift commander. In the past, she has been assigned as sergeant of the sex crimes and youth crime section in the Criminal Investigations Unit.

Paul W. Nash, who joined the department in 1987, was promoted to sergeant. He currently is assigned to Planning and Analysis. He was first assigned to Uniform Patrol, then to Planning and Research as policies and standards coordinator.

Brenda Starks, who joined the department in 1988, was promoted to sergeant. Since joining the department, Starks has served in uniform patrol and the Criminal Investigations Unit. She currently is assigned to Uniform Patrol as shift supervisor.

Lt. Virginus ``Leroy'' Reynolds joined the Portsmouth Police Department in 1964 and retired in July.

Reynolds began his career in the Uniform Division, was promoted to sergeant in 1973, then to lieutenant in 1975. The majority of his career was spent in the Criminal Investigations Unit, where he held such positions as shift commander in Uniform Patrol and commander of what used to be the Traffic Bureau. He also was the first SWAT Team commander, a Narcotics commander and in his last position in was with Criminal Investigations.

Sgt. Kenneth ``Wayne'' Gainous joined the department in 1969 and retired in July. Since he joined the department, Gainous served in the Uniform Patrol Division, was sergeant of the K-9 Unit, sergeant of Homicide and also has served as sergeant in the Narcotics Unit.

Detective Everett ``Earl'' Anderson joined the department in 1976 and retired in July 1996. He started his career in the Uniform Patrol Division, then served time in the Warrant Squad. Most recently, Anderson was assigned to the Forensics Unit.

Detective Johnny Slaughter joined the department in 1976 and retired in June 1996.

Slaughter served in the Uniform Patrol Unit, Criminal Investigations, Police Training and in his last position as the department recruiter.

Sgt. Walter ``Tommy'' Shipley joined the department in 1976 and retired in March.

Shipley started off in Uniform Patrol before becoming a sergeant in 1992, when he was assigned to the Criminal Investigations Unit as sergeant of Homicide. Shipley also was a Crisis Negotiator for the department. ILLUSTRATION: Photos
