JAMES S. HAMLIN

James Sherrill Hamlin, 80, a retired shipyard worker, died Sept. 27, 1996, in Alexandria, Va.

Mr. Hamlin was born in Riedsville, N.C., and lived most of his life in the Ocean View section of Norfolk, first on Hickory St. and later at Nansemond on the Bay Condominium. He went by ``Jim,'' ``Sherrill,'' and ``Pete'' depending on the group and time in his life.

Mr. Hamlin was a member and graduate of the first Apprentice School Class at Norfolk Shipbuilding and Drydock Corporation. He continued working at NORSHIPCO for 38 years as a ship superintendent. One of his last jobs was building a patrol boat for the Thai Navy. Mr. Hamlin was a member of the Tall Cedars of Lebanon and Ocean View Masonic Lodge (NU)335. He was a sports enthusiast and an avid golfer who won a number of local tournaments.

Mr. Hamlin was a member of Miles Memorial United Methodist Church where he served in a number of positions over the years. He is survived by two daughters, Mildred Chesbrough, Janice Bassett, both of Alexandria; a son, James S. Hamlin Jr. of Annandale, Va.; two sisters, Frances H. Knudsen of Norfolk, Betty H. Smith of Virginia Beach; four grandchildren, Susan, Scott, Kimberly and Megan. His wife of 53 years, Muriel Alice Hamlin died Nov. 8, 1993.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday in Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel, by the Rev. Morris Bennett. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 4 to 5 p.m. today in the funeral home. Memorial gifts may be made to Miles Memorial United Methodist Church, 9450 Granby St., Norfolk.
