Regarding the Goals 2000 money: Your article and editorial (Sept. 21) were sadly lopsided.
The real question is: Why does our powerful educational establishment seem powerless to create good schools? The answer: Our so-called educators are collectivist ideologues, more interested in creating mediocrity. Every ``reform'' they've presented in the past 50 years has deformed education downward. Goals 2000 is more of the same. Why else does the Department of Education have to offer these huge bribes?
Many cheers for the governor. Now, if he could just persuade the state's teachers to resign from the National Education Association (and the Virginia Education Association), then we'd be getting somewhere. Good education does not come from money and computers. It comes - surprise - from a fierce commitment to high educational standards.
