Ret. Chief Petty Officer Donald E. Custer Sr., 62, of the 800 block of Plainsman Circle, died Sept. 28, 1996, in a Virginia Beach hospital.
Mr. Custer retired as a chief petty officer in the U.S. Navy after 22 years and was a tax auditor for the city of Norfolk in the Commissioner of Revenue's office. He was a Dayton, Ohio, native, as well as a member of St. Nicholas Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus (NU)4632.
Survivors include his wife, Jane C. Custer; a daughter, Claire T. Kroft, and her husband, Edward, of Virginia Beach; a son, Donald E. Custer Jr. of Virginia Beach; sisters, Shirley Taylor and Betty Davis, both of Bradenton, Fla.; a brother, Grover Eppard of Dayton; and five grandchildren, Maria, Brian, Jeremy, Phillip and Amanda.
A Mass of the Resurrection will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Nicholas Catholic Church by Father James M. Noto. Burial will be in Princess Anne Memorial Park. The family will be at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Lynnhaven Chapel, from 7 to 9 p.m. today. Memorials can be made to St. Nicholas Catholic Church Building Fund or Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters.
