PIER FISHING SLOW ALONG DARE COAST

Pier fishing along the Dare coast was slow during the weekend with only a few exceptions.

Kitty Hawk Pier reported the only good spot run during the weekend. Nice-sized spot bit steadily between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Saturday. Scattered spot were landed Sunday.

Avalon Pier anglers caught a few spot Saturday morning, but fishing Saturday afternoon and Sunday was slow.

Fishermen on Nags Head Pier landed a few spot, small mullet and black drum Saturday. Only a handful of spot were decked Sunday.

Several Spanish mackerel and bluefish were landed from the end of Jennette's Pier Saturday morning. A few spot also were taken. Action was slow Saturday afternoon and all day Sunday.

A few Spanish mackerel, bluefish, spot and mullet were taken early Saturday on Outer Banks Pier. Little action was reported Saturday afternoon or Sunday.

On Hatteras Island, a few spot, bluefish and croaker were caught on Rodanthe Pier Saturday. Fair numbers of bottom fish were landed Sunday morning, and a 6 1/2-pound puppy drum was taken Sunday afternoon.

A few bottom fish and bluefish were caught throughout the weekend on Avon Pier.

A handful of flounder, blues and puppy drum were landed on Frisco Pier Saturday. Fair numbers of spot were taken from the end of the pier for a few hours Sunday.

Small bottom fish and a few blues were landed in the surf Saturday and Sunday along the northern beaches.

Small bottom fish, bluefish and a few puppy drum were landed around Oregon Inlet. Nice-sized gray trout were caught by anglers fishing from the bridge catwalk late Saturday night.

Scattered small bottom fish and bluefish were taken along the beach from Rodanthe to Buxton during the weekend.

A 39-pound drum was landed at Cape Point Friday night, and a few puppy drum were beached Saturday. Nice-sized puppy drum were taken Saturday night, and scattered flounder were landed Sunday.

Surf fishing was slow along the beach from Frisco to False Point throughout the weekend.

Charters trolling spoons a few miles off the beach near Oregon Inlet caught a few king and Spanish mackerel Saturday.

Blue water action was fairly good between the 40530 and the 40540 Loran lines, where some nice-sized yellowfin tuna were landed Saturday.

Tuna fishing was good near the point and east of Oregon Inlet Sunday. Charters caught between six and 12 50-pound class yellowfin tuna per boat. Dolphin fishing was good at the point.

No boats went offshore from Hatteras Saturday. One boat, the Hatteras Fever, fished Sunday, and landed some wahoo.

Spot action should be good on ocean piers along the Dare coast as long as the wind remains from a northerly direction. The water temperature was 70 degrees Monday at the Army Corps of Engineers Pier in Duck, and 73 degrees at Frisco Pier on Hatteras Island. by CNB
