KAY ANDERSON: SENIOR CENTER-FORWARD LEADS BAYSIDE TO 2 OVERTIME VICTORIES

Last Tuesday, Bayside's field hockey team found itself tied with Salem after regulation play. Thirty seconds into the OT, Kay Anderson scored to give the Marlins the victory.

Two days later, Bayside went into overtime again, this time against Kellam. And for the second time in 48 hours, Anderson decided things with another sudden-death goal.

``Athlete of the Week'' material? You bet. A no-brainer, it would seem, to everyone except Anderson.

``Really? Me?'' Anderson replied upon learning she was this week's selection.

One might think Anderson has a short memory. But the senior center-forward apparently just doesn't focus on individual achievements. It's all about the team, she'll insist. Ask a question about Anderson and you'll receive an answer about Bayside.

This makes her an ideal co-captain, but a tough interview. For example:

Talk about your play last week.''

``The team really played well.''

Do you try to pick your play up in pressure situations?

``Everybody on the team has to step up.''

Coach Kathy Mustain is into teamspeak, as well. But she makes an exception when it comes to her senior star.

``Kay's just been playing great for us,'' Mustain said.

Anderson's strong play to date is hardly unexpected. She was one of only two juniors to be named first-team All-Beach District a year ago.

But she's clearly assumed a more dominant role in the Marlins' attack this season. Anderson has scored nine goals in nine games, or one less than she scored all last year.

If this production keeps up, Anderson will probably continue to command attention. And while she may not like it, she'll probably shrug it off and just keep on scoring.

After all, it's good for the team. ILLUSTRATION: Photo by CNB
