You're wandering through the produce deparment and see jicama on

the shelf. The sign tells you what it is, but you haven't the

faintest idea what to do with it. Or, you're trying to cut your food

budget and wonder what the best buys are. Or, you're planning a trip

to the mountains and want to know where there's a good place to eat.

Starting today, the Flavor staff will try to answer all these

questions and more.

``Try This,'' a new feature by food writer Betty Douglass, will

introduce you to uncommonly purchased but commonly seen ingredients.

Beginning today, ``Try This'' appears weekly in Wednesday's Flavor.

``Market Report'' will start next Wednesday, giving you tips on how

to save money. This new weekly column will feature the best buys,

special offers and new products.

As always, ``Desperation Dinners'' and ``Joan McCormick'' will

remain weekly features of the Wednesday Flavor.

However, to make space for the new features, something had to go.

In this case, it was Morsels. But it didn't go far. The weekly

column moves to Sundays starting this weekend.

Most Sundays we'll review a local restaurant but when we don't,

you'll see ``Miles to go Before I Eat,'' Stephen Harriman's

occasional, and popular, series on eateries worth a road trip.

And finally, since the Humble Steward, Jim Raper, left for the

south of France, we've hired M.F. Onderdonk to write a bi-weekly

column, not just about wine but other beverages as well. ``Wines and

Spirits'' makes it's debut this Sunday.
