Police were in occasional contact with an armed man who was holding an employee at The Pines Residential Treatment Center in the 800 block of Crawford Parkway early Wednesday morning.
The confrontation began shortly after 6 p.m. Tuesday when the man refused to let three employees leave the center, a treatment facility for teens and adolescents with psychiatric problems.
The man later allowed two of the employees to leave. A police spokeswoman did not know if the man was connected to the center or knew the employees.
Portsmouth's Tactical Response Unit was among the officials responding. Police had sealed off several blocks around Fort Lane and Crawford Parkway.
