MARY D. KNOOP

Mrs. Mary ``Angel'' Devine Knoop, 73, a former resident of 4620 Curtiss Dr., Virginia Beach, died Sept. 26, 1996, in Tucson.

She was the wife of the late CDR John H. Knoop (Ret.) Mrs. Knoop was born in Cleveland, Ohio, and is the daughter of the late Thomas B. and Geraldine Devine. She attended high school at St. Joseph's Academy for Women in Columbus, Ohio, and received her B.A. in French and Music from the College of St. Teresa in Winona, Minn., in 1944. After graduation, she attended the University of Chicago Conservatory of Music. She was also a graduate student in the School of Humanities at Old Dominion University. Mrs. Knoop settled in Virginia Beach in 1960 after tours of duty with her husband in Ohio, California and Hawaii. A lifelong educator, Mrs. Knoop taught at Norfolk Catholic High School from 1960-1981. She also taught in the Portsmouth school system. She was a member of the Church of the Holy Apostles in Virginia Beach. She was a member of the Tidewater Chapter of the Gold Star Wives in which she had served as president.

Mrs. Knoop was preceded in death by her husband, John; a brother, Thomas B. Devine, Jr.; a sister, Jayne Holsinger; and a granddaughter, Ericka Kurz. She is survived by seven children, Mrs. Kathryn (Bob) Judge of Austin, Texas; Rev. Jennie (Joe Pfister) Knoop, of Oxford, N.C.; John H. (Rita) Knoop Jr. of Durham, N.C.; Mark (Hunter) Knoop of Virginia Beach; James (Randy Sheridan) Knoop of Toronto, Canada; CDR. Kevin Knoop (Mary Jo Chandler) of Chesapeake and David (Melissa) Knoop of Jupiter, Fla.; and 15 grandchildren.

Also surviving are her sisters, Mrs. Patrica Manda, Mrs. Geraldine Murphy, Mrs. Martha Eyerman, Mrs. Ann Yersavich, all of Tucson, Mrs. Josephine Farson of Mount Vernon, Ohio, and Mrs. Margaret Diehl of Columbus, Oh.; a brother-in-law, Perry Holsinger of Columbus, Oh.; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Sue Devine of Little Rock, Ark.; and numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

A Funeral Mass was held on Sept. 30, 1996, at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church in Tucson, Ariz. A memorial mass will be held at the Church of the Holy Apostles, Virginia Beach, on Oct. 7, 1996, at 7 p.m. Graveside services will be held at the Knoop Family Cemetery in Troy, Ohio, on Oct. 12, 1996 at 3 p.m. A memorial mass will follow at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Troy, Ohio, at 4:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Norfolk Catholic High School, 4552 Princess Anne Rd., Virginia Beach, Va.
