Howard Walbridge Newby, 80, died Wednesday, Oct. 2, 1996.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Ilene Wynne Newby. Howard had been a lifelong resident of Norfolk. He graduated from Maury High School and attended the Norfolk division of the College of William and Mary. He was a longtime member of Park Place United Methodist Church and the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Lodge (NU)38. He retired from retail sales. He was also a mason.
Survivors include three sons, Edward Walbridge Newby and his wife, Elizabeth of Parsippany, N.J., John Wynne Newby and his wife, Gloria of Hampton and William Howard Newby of Norfolk. He also had three grandchildren, Michael Richard Newby of Richmond, Meredith Ilann Newby of Tallahassee, Fla., and Beth Kemper Newby of Parsippany.
A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday in Forest Lawn Cemetery with the Dr. Charles H. Smith III and the Rev. Francis Collins officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. today in Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home Tidewater Drive Chapel.
