PIER FISHING IS SLOW, BUT CHARTER BOATS HIT HOT TUNA

Good catches of yellowfin tuna were reported Thursday by Oregon Inlet charter fishing around the 40530 Loran line. The tuna weighed between 30 and 50 pounds.

Wahoo fishing off Hatteras was good. A few king mackerel and dolphin also were taken. A blue marlin was released by the Marlin Mania and a sailfish was released by the Drumstick.

Inshore trolling for king mackerel was fair a few miles off Oregon Inlet. Some Spanish mackerel and tailor blues also were taken.

Pier fishing was slow along the northern beaches Thursday.

A few small bluefish and Spanish mackerel were landed from the end of Kitty Hawk Pier during the morning, and a few croaker and spot were caught in the afternoon.

A few small bluefish were landed early in the day on Avalon Pier. A good run of tailor blues developed during the afternoon close to the beach. Quite a few albacore were seen but none were taken.

Anglers on Nags Head Pier reported slow fishing, with only a few small bottom fish landed.

Fishing also was slow on Jennette's Pier, where only a few spot and sand perch were taken.

A couple of black drum and a few spot were caught from Outer Banks Pier during the morning. Afternoon fishing was slow.

On Hatteras Island, Rodanthe Pier reported a handful of spot and bluefish taken.

Fishermen on Avon Pier experienced a slow morning, but caught plenty of spot in the afternoon.

Fishing was unusually slow on Frisco Pier, with only a few flounder, Spanish mackerel and bluefish taken.

Surf fishing was fair along the beach from Corolla to Oregon Inlet Thursday morning, with a few bottom fish landed. Action slowed during the afternoon because of increasing northeast winds and rough seas.

Spot, croaker, small bluefish and a few flounder were landed by surfcasters around Oregon Inlet.

A 36-inch drum was beached at Ramp 23 Thursday morning. Plenty of small bluefish were landed in the surf from Rodanthe to Buxton.

Some puppy drum were taken Wednesday night at Cape Point. Scattered puppy drum and 2- to 4-pound bluefish were landed Thursday. Quite a few stripers were hooked and released along the beach north of Cape Point.

Scattered small bluefish, flounder and small gray trout were taken by surfcasters along the beach from Frisco to Hatteras Inlet.

Spot fishing on ocean piers along the Dare coast should be good this weekend, provided sea conditions don't get too rough.

The water temperature was 69 degrees Thursday at the Army Corps of Engineers Pier in Duck and 72 degrees at Frisco Pier on Hatteras Island. by CNB
