ELITE PLAYERS ON DISPLAY IN BASEBALL INVITATIONAL

Some of the finest high school baseball players on the East Coast, including six members of the Virginian-Pilot All-Tidewater team, will be on display this weekend at the first Tidewater Fall Baseball Invitational, which begins today.

A total of 10 teams from six states will be playing in the invitational, set up to showcase players in front of some 30 pro scouts and about 100 college coaches.

Games will be played at Old Dominion University, First Colonial, Greenbrier Christian and at Trant Field in Virginia Beach. Competition begins tonight at ODU with a doubleheader. General Dye (Md.) will face Williamsport (Pa.) at 6 p.m., followed by the Tidewater Orioles vs. Oriolelanders (Md.). Play continues Saturday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The Tidewater Orioles roster includes four first-team All-Tidewater players: Virginian-Pilot player of the year Jason Dubois of Cox, Jeff Butler of First Colonial and Bradford Tibbs and Mike Cuddyer of Great Bridge. Also playing for the Orioles are second-team All-Tidewater picks Ross Robertson of Greenbrier Christian and John Curtice of Great Bridge.

The rest of the Tidewater Orioles schedule: vs. Mid-Atlantic Rookies (Pa.) at 11:45 a.m. Saturday at Greenbrier, vs. Mid-Atlantic Showcase (Md.) at 5:15 p.m. Saturday at Greenbrier and vs. Richmond at 3 p.m. Sunday at Greenbrier. by CNB
