The Hampton Roads Admirals have added six players to their training camp roster, including two under contract to the Washington Capitals.
Joel Poirier, a left wing who played the second half of last season with the Admirals, and Joel Theriault, a defenseman who had 573 penalty minutes last season in junior hockey, were assigned to the Admirals by the Capitals.
Four more players were signed by the Portland Pirates of the AHL and assigned to Hampton Roads. By signing two-way contracts with Portland, they can't be called up by other AHL or IHL teams. Assigned to Norfolk by the Pirates:
Goalie Darryl Paquette, who split time between the Admirals and Pirates last season. He and Shamus Gregga, who was a part-time starter in 1994-95, will vie to start.
Defenseman Chris Phelps, an All-ECHL choice the last two seasons in Hampton Roads.
Right wing Rick Kowalsky, an All-ECHL choice in 1994-95 who was injured much of last season.
Forward Dominic Maltais, who starred for the Admirals last season before breaking his wrist.
Theriault, a 6-foot-3, 201-pound Quebec native, had 26 points to go along with his 573 penalty minutes in 63 games for Drummondville of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. He was a fifth-round draft choice of the Capitals in 1995.
The Admirals open training camp Sunday at 9 a.m. in the Ice Palace skating rink in York County. Practices are open to the public.
The team is scheduled to practice each day between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. except for Thursday, Oct. 10, when practice begins at 8:30. The team will scrimmage Sunday at 3:50 p.m. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
