Two Hampton Roads business executives were honored by the League of Women Voters this week for their contributions to the community.
David R. Goode, chairman, president and chief executive of Norfolk Southern Corp., and John Matson, executive vice president and regional executive for Signet Bank, received the League's Civic Contribution Award. A number of elected officials, corporate officers, bankers and civic leaders and a leadership organization were nominated for the award.
Goode and Matson were selected for their efforts in marketing Hampton Roads as a region and encouraging cities to cooperate to resolve differences, according to league officials.
Goode serves on the boards of Caterpillar Inc., Georgia-Pacific Corp., Texas Instruments Inc. and the Virginia Economic Development Partnership. He is a trustee for the General Douglas MacArthur Memorial Foundation, Hollins College and the Virginia Foundation for Independent Colleges.
Matson is treasurer and director of the Children's Health System, chairman of Forward Hampton Roads, an executive committee member of the Greater Norfolk Corporation and director of Virginia Beach Vision.
Goode and Matson were honored at dinner Thursday at the Norfolk Airport Hilton. The dinner, attended by more than 300 local leaders, was the inaugural event in a three-year project organized by the league to improve regional cooperation. by CNB
