AREA SOFTBALL PLAYERS HEADED TO HALL

The Tidewater Virginia Amateur Softball Association will hold its 14th annual Hall of Fame awards banquet at 6 tonight at the Lake Wright Resort and Conference Center in Norfolk.

Several area players, teams and sponsors will be inducted and tickets are $20.

Being inducted this evening are Melva Grimstead, Billy White and Jay Smith of Chesapeake; Bob Freeland and Dewey Fussell of Portsmouth; and Gina Sivells and Al Walke of Virginia Beach.

Philly Fellion - the Virginia Beach founder of the Tidewater Amateur Sports cable television show - is being inducted for his longtime role as a sponsor.

The Tiller's Taxi team of Norfolk will enter the hall as a team - with 16 members being inducted. Six team members have already been inducted into the hall for other achievements.

Linwood Manning of Chesapeake will receive the meritorious service award; Ed Tyree of Norfolk will get a special recognition award; and John Haney - formerly of Norfolk - is the Commissioner's Selection.

Tonight's inductees are being recognized for their achievements in ASA softball, but many have impressive resumes that include honors in other softball organizations.
