Virginia Wesleyan will formally open its new 1,000-seat soccer/lacrosse stadium today at 1:30 p.m.
Opening ceremonies, held in conjunction with homecoming weekend, will be between the women's and men's soccer games against Roanoke and Eastern Mennonite.
Construction on the two-phase stadium project began last May. Phase I, which is complete, includes a grass field with irrigation system, bleachers, press box, scoreboard and fencing. Phase II, which will include field lighting, locker rooms, concessions, offices and restrooms, is scheduled for completion in the Fall of 1997.
The stadium is the first major addition to the school's athletic facilities since the construction of a softball complex in 1984. Virginia Wesleyan officials hope the new stadium will give the school the opportunity to host regional and NCAA postseason play. by CNB
