Jesse Hawthorne Daley, 16, recently of Norfolk, died Oct. 1, 1996.
Jesse was the son of Jay Kruger Galloway and Ken Daley. Jay Galloway and her husband, Walter Galloway, moved to Charlotte this past summer, and Jesse had just begun his junior year of high school at Charlotte Latin School. While a resident of Norfolk, Jesse had attended Norfolk Collegiate School from first grade through his sophomore year.
Jesse was a high honors student who had both a love of learning and a love of sports. He was selected to the National Honor Society in his freshman year at Collegiate, and this past year was a member of the ``Scholastic Achievement Program'' sponsored by the Virginian-Pilot in recognition of superb achievement in academics, citizenship, school activities and community service. While at Collegiate, Jesse received numerous scholastic honors, including the Elsie M. Mueller Award for Excellence in Latin and certificates for excellence in AP calculus/trigonometry/analysis, English, German and Latin. He achieved magna cum laude on the National Latin II exam; he was elected to the Latin Honor Society of the Tidewater Classical Symposium; he was elected to the Norfolk Collegiate Honor Court; and he successfully completed an extracurricular Aeronautics Explorer Program at NASA/Langley. Last year he was president of the Latin club and vice president of the conservation club.
While in seventh and eighth grades at Collegiate, Jesse completed his first year of geometry at the Center for Talented Youth three-week summer program sponsored by Johns Hopkins University at Franklin & Marshall College, Pa. This achievement also merited him a four-credit scholarship from Old Dominion University to take Astronomy I during the 1994 summer session, before his freshman year at Collegiate.
In sports, Jesse's two great loves were baseball and skiing. At age 6, he began playing t-ball in the Wards Corner Little League; over the next 10 years, he played in each age division up through the Super Seniors. He was an All-Star. In eighth grade he joined the junior varsity baseball team at Collegiate, and he was a varsity player in his freshman and sophomore years.
Although leaving his classmates and friends at Norfolk Collegiate was difficult for Jesse, he enjoyed his new school, Charlotte Latin, where he was enrolled in all AP honors courses. He quickly made friends there and joined the Math Team and cross country track team.
In addition to his mother and father, Jesse is survived by three half-brothers, Essen Gabriel Daley, Aran Christopher Dailey and David Kenneth Daley; his maternal grandmother, Linda B. Kruger; his paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth G. Daley Sr.; and a large and loving extended family.
A memorial service for Jesse will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday in Christ and St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 560 W. Olney Road, Norfolk. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made to the Wards Corner/Navy Base Little League, c/o Mike Tremper, treasurer, 518 Burleigh Ave., Norfolk, Va. 23505.
