ROBERT E. HUGHES

Robert Earl Hughes, 78, of the 100 block of S. Parliament Drive died Oct. 3, 1996, in a Norfolk hospital.

A native of Sylvania, Ga., Mr. Hughes had retired from the U.S. Navy. He had also retired from the Chesapeake Health Department as a health inspector. He was a member of the Catholic Church of the Ascension, the Italo-American Lodge (NU)1077, Portsmouth, and the Fleet Reserve Association Branch (NU)99. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, a Guadalcanal veteran and a USS McCauley veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Angela Hughes; a son, Robert E. Hughes of Virginia Beach; a sister, Helen Qualls of California; two brothers, Harold Hughes and Prescott Hughes, both of Florida; two grandchildren, Jonathan Hughes and Lindsay Hughes, both of St. Paul, Minn.

A Christian funeral liturgy will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday in the Catholic Church of the Ascension by Fr. James E. Parke. Friends are invited to gather with the family in the church at 11 a.m. Monday with entombment following in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens, Norfolk. The family will receive friends at the church from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Sunday. Memorial donations may be made to the Catholic Church of the Ascension. Smith and Williams Funeral Home is in charge.
