Target Stores to open its first Norfolk store
Target Stores, the Minneapolis-based chain of discount stores, plans to open its third Hampton Roads outlet in Norfolk Sunday. In July, Target debuted its first local stores in Chesapeake's Greenbrier community and in Hampton along Saville Road. The Norfolk store will be located off Military Highway near Military Circle. The chain also plans to open stores in Virginia Beach, Newport News and the Williamsburg area. Target, a division of Dayton Hudson Corp., is the third largest discount retailer nationwide, behind Wal-Mart and Kmart. (Staff) GTE reduces charges for in-state cell calls
GTE Mobilnet said it has eliminated long-distance charges for calls within Virginia for most customers on its cellular network. The call has to originate in a GTE service territory, including Hampton Roads. And only customers in GTE's so-called SuperSystem plans qualify. GTE said the move will typically save its customers making long-distance calls about 30 cents a minute on qualifying calls. The move is part of an ongoing drop in rates by cellular carriers all over the country as they gird for competition beginning late this year from a wave of as many as a half-dozen new wireless phone competitors.
