I just finished reading Susan Leichtman's letter (Sept. 23) concerning her feelings on the movie ``Mr. Holland's Opus.''
Our students do not need to ``muddle'' through math and listen to more music, as Ms. Leichtman suggests. Our students need to attend class, pay attention, do their homework and study and learn. This will be one of the most important values we can pass on to our kids.
No, music is not bad. However, young people need to turn off the garbage now being sent out across the airwaves and open the books. Ms. Leichtman asks, ``Who will be performing music for us . . . 20 years from now? My answer is, just look at who is performing music today. It gets worse every year.
If our children receive a good solid education, which includes above all things the three R's, they will be inspired to create and propagate good musical works, not the other way around.
