Citizens seeking energy assistance for the winter may begin submitting applications on Oct. 8. None will be accepted after the deadline of Nov. 8.
Applications have been mailed to those who received help from the program last year and to some other households that receive food stamps. The forms are available at the Social Services Department.
The energy assistance program has two parts: fuel assistance for those who need help in paying for heating bills and crisis assistance for those who need help in paying for deposits on utilities or extra charges for cutoffs. Persons seeking help for repairs or purchases of heating equipment will be referred by the Social Services Department to the Southeastern Tidewater Opportunity Project.
Fuel assistance applications will be accepted on a walk-in basis from Oct. 8 through Nov. 8. Eligibility is based on gross monthly income and the number of people in a household. Households with members 60 years of age or older or with a disabled member may not have more than $3,000 in resources, and all others may not have more than $2,000. Applicants are required to furnish verifications of income and resources.
Applications for crisis assistance will be accepted Nov. 1 to March 15 unless the money runs out.
