Kayak tours, night hikes, bird walks, lectures and a Harvest Fest are among the events planned this month at First Landing/Seashore State Park as part of a statewide Fall River Renaissance celebration.
The monthlong observance, led by Virginia's Department of Conservation and Recreation, is focusing on preserving and improving the state's rivers and waterways.
The kayak tours, leaving from the park's 64th Street boat ramp, will give participants a view from the water of the park's marshes and beaches. Tours take place at 9 a.m. today and at 6 p.m. Saturdays and 9 a.m. Sundays through October.
Bird walks to look for migrating hawks and song birds are planned at 9 a.m. Tuesdays, Oct. 15 and 29. Night hikes to learn how to use your senses in the dark will be at 7:30 p.m. Saturdays, Oct. 12 and 26. Hikes and walks leave from the park's visitor center.
A lecture on the work of the state's Division of Natural Heritage will be at 7 p.m. Monday and a lecture on sediment and erosion control will be at 7 p.m. Oct. 15, both in the park picnic shelter.
Harvest Fest will be a celebration from 4 to 8 p.m. Oct. 19. Storytelling, hayrides through history, candle making and cider pressing are among the activities planned. Harvest Fest admission is $3 for parking and $2 per person (children 6 and younger are free).
All other programs are free. A parking fee of $2 on weekdays and $3 on weekends is in effect. Call 481-4836 for more information on other hikes and walks and to register for programs. ILLUSTRATION: Staff file photo by BETH BERGMAN
