Dr. James LeRoy Morgan, 72, a retired pediatrician, died Oct. 5, 1996, in his home.
Dr. Morgan, a native of Norfolk, was the son of the late John Kindred Morgan and Mrs. Ellie Smith Copelan Morgan. He was a graduate of Duke University and the Duke University Medical School. He was a Phi Beta Kappa and a member of Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honorary Society. He served his pediatric residency at Duke University Hospital and Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, N.Y.
During the Korean War, Dr. Morgan served in the U.S. Navy. Upon his release from active duty he practiced pediatrics in Portsmouth from 1954 until 1986. He was past president of the Maryview Medical Center house staff and was a member of the Portsmouth General Hospital house staff. Professional memberships include the American Medical Association; American Academy of Pediatrics; Medical Society of Virginia; and the Virginia Pediatric Society. He was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church and the Churchland Lions Club.
Survivors include his wife, Doris L. Morgan; three daughters, Susan M. Rea and her husband, Sonny; Nancy M. Roberson and her husband, Frank; Carol M. Jackson and her husband, Paul; one son, James L. Morgan, Jr. and his wife, Georgia; and his nine grandchildren, Stephanie Rea, Stephen Rea, James Strickland, Matthew Roberson, Ashley Roberson, Kyle Jackson, Will Jackson, Richard Morgan and Eliott Morgan.
A private burial Tuesday morning will be followed by a memorial service at 3 p.m. Tuesday in Centenary United Methodist Church by the Rev. Donald H. Seely and Rev. Celeste Heath. The family will receive friends at the church after the memorial service.
Memorial donations may be made to Centenary United Methodist Church or to the Wellspring Hospice Program. Foster Funeral Home, Portsmouth, is handling arrangements.
