Haidee Carolyn Ewell, 99, died Oct. 5, 1996, at Westminster Canterbury of Blue Ridge, where she had been a resident since 1990.
Mrs. Ewell's parents were the late William J. Woodis and Clara Rohr Woodis of Stamford, Conn. Mrs. Ewell was the wife of the late George T. Ewell, a prominent businessman and community leader in Portsmouth. Before her marriage, she appeared on the vaudeville stage with Esther Ralston, a movie and television star of the 1920s. Mrs. Ewell was a member of the Green Acres Presbyterian Church, Portsmouth, and active in the Woman's Club of Green Acres, the Craddock Music Club, the Portsmouth Garden Club, Eastern Star, and many other community organizations.
Survivors include a son, William K. Ewell, and a daughter-in-law, Mary M. Ewell of Charlottesville, Va.; three granddaughters, Haidee E. Allerson of Washington, D.C., Lucinda Ewell-Day of Annapolis, Md., and Teri Pentecost of Fair Haven, N.J.; and four great-grandchildren, Derik Allerton of Denver, Andrew Ewell-Day of Annapolis and Joseph and Lillie Pentecost of Fair Haven.
A memorial service will be held at Westminster Canterbury Chapel at 10 a.m. Monday by the Rev. William Smith. Another service will be held OCt. 12 in Evergren Memorial park, Portsmouth. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to eh Westminster Fellowship Fund, 250 Pantops Mountain Road, Charlottesville, Va. 22901. Hill and Wood Funeral Service is in charge.
