KENNETH L. WHITE

Kenneth L. White, 84, of Lynchburg, died Oct. 5, 1996.

He was born on July 14, 1912, in Campbell County, Va., a son of the late John Thomas White and Elizabeth Bolling Jones White.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Bertha Mae Spencer White, and is survived by a son, Kenneth Spencer White and his wife, Jane Baber White, of Lynchburg; a granddaughter, Virginia White O'Keefe and her husband, William P. O'Keefe III, and two great-grandchildren, Molly Hunter O'Keefe and Samuel Spencer O'Keefe, all of Baltimore; two grandsons, K. Spencer White Jr. of New York and Charles Baber White of Williamsburg; a sister, Madeline W. Mitchell of Lynchburg; and two brothers, John C. White of Lynchburg and Saunders A. White of South Boston, Va.

Mr. White was a three-term member of the Lynchburg City Council from 1964 to 1976, serving as vice mayor of the city from 1974 to 1976. He was a member of the Lynchburg City School Board from 1962 to 1964. He served for ten years as a member of the Lynchburg Board of Adjustments and Appeals. He was president of Campbell-Payne, Inc. and was past president of Montview Hotel Corporation and Blue Ridge Hotel Corporation. He was a founding co-chairman of the Keep Lynchburg Beautiful Commission, former vice president and member of the Board of Directors of the Virginia Travel Council, and a former member of the Board of Trustees of Ferrum College, the Lynchburg Advisory Board of Sovran Bank, the Board of the Florence Crittendon Home, a former Trustee of Fort Hill United Methodist Church, and a member of Fort Hill Lions Club.

A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday from Fort Hill United Methodist Church with the Rev. John A. Siegle officiating. The family will receive friends today from 5 to 8 p.m. at the home of his son at 711 Old Trents Ferry Road. Memorial gifts may be sent to the Kenneth L. and Bertha Mae Spencer White Fund of the Greater Lynchburg Community Trust, P.O. Box 700, Lynchburg, VA 24505 or to Fort Hill United Methodist Church, 106 Oakridge Blvd., Lynchburg, VA 24502. Whitten Park Avenue Chapel is in charge of arrangements .
