SIMPLE NUMBERS HAVE COMPLEX MEANINGS FOR AREA SPORTS NUTS

A look at some of the locally flavored numbers, and the news behind those numbers, on the college sports scene:

1 - Number worn by Army second-string split end Rod Richardson (Norcom). It's also the number of yards gained on his only carry, and number of yards gained on his two receptions. Richardson also has one punt return, for 11 yards. Still, Cadets coach Bob Sutton reportedly loves the speed and quickness of the 5-foot-8, 162-pound sophomore, and projects him as a starter in 1997. This season, Army won its first three games, the first time that's happened against Division I-A opponents since 1966.

3.1 - Distance in miles Old Dominion assistant women's basketball coach Allison Greene will dribble a basketball during Friday's Larchmont 5K Rat Race. Greene, who once did this for 16 miles and was prepared to do it in the New York Marathon until race officials rejected the idea, will dribble through Friday's race to promote Old Dominion's Midnight Madness celebration Oct. 14 beginning at 10 p.m. at the field house.

5 - Number of rushing yards SMU gained against Navy in the Midshipmen's 19-17 victory Sept. 21. Navy freshman defensive tackle Brian Wilson, a two-time state heavyweight wrestling champion at Cox, made five tackles against the Mustangs in his first college start.

8 - Ivy League record points in a game (3 goals, 2 assists) registered by Princeton's Kirsty Hale (Cox) in the Tigers' 7-1 victory over Dartmouth. The performance earned Hale, the conference rookie of the year last season, Ivy League Player of the Week honors. She entered the week with a league-leading 21 points.

10 - Preseason ranking of the Old Dominion women's basketball team according to College Sports magazine. Teams ranked ahead of the Lady Monarchs, in order: Stanford, Georgia, Connecticut, Western Kentucky, Alabama, Tennessee, Iowa, Virginia and Penn State.

11 - Team-leading men's soccer point total (five goals, one assist) for Virginia Wesleyan striker Gary DePalma. Danny McVey (Tallwood) ranks second on the Marlins (5-2-1 entering Saturday's game against Eastern Mennonite) with nine. Saturday, the Marlins and Lady Marlins played their first games in the school's new soccer/lacrosse stadium.

17 - Point total (six goals, five assists) of William and Mary soccer star Whitney Cali (Green Run), third-best on the 12th-ranked Tribe. Freshmen Lindsay Nohl (27 points) and Missy Wycinsky (30) are the team's leading scorers.

32 - Placing of Old Dominion women's cross country coach Lorraine Hochella out of 75 competitors in the IAAF World Half Marathon Championships Sept. 30 in Palma de Mallorca, an island off the coast of Spain. Hochella was second among U.S. runners.

81.3 - Team-leading stroke average of Longwood's Karla Roberson (Great Bridge) on the Lancers' women's golf team after four rounds. Teammate Katie Soule (Franklin) is fourth among Lancers at 88.8.

155: Number of digs by Norfolk State sophomore hitter April Johnson in the three-day CIAA Women's Volleyball Roundup last weekend at North Carolina Central in Durham, N.C. Johnson, who also had 87 kills, 11 blocks, nine aces and seven assists in the Roundup, was named CIAA Player of the Week. Freshman Spartanette Janelle Ross (70 digs, 37 assists, 33 kills, nine blocks at Central) was named the league's rookie of the week. by CNB
