JUICY NEWS: CITRUS SEASON HAS BEGUN IN FLORIDA

THOUGH SKIES here have been gray, citrus items from the Sunshine state can brighten your meals.

Florida citrus season has begun, and the newest items include seedless varieties of navel oranges, tangerines and grapefruit. Florida juice oranges are available in 4-pound bags for about $1.58.

Some of the best produce buys this week include broccoli from 78 to 99 cents a bunch, Bartlett or Bosc pears at 69 cents a pound and red bell peppers at 59 cents each.

Fall is here, and so are the many varieties of squash from acorn to butternut. Don't forget to pick up your pumpkin for making pies and decorating.

``Cooler weather means indoor cooking,'' says Dale Faunce, vice president of perishables for Farm Fresh.

Slow-cook meats, such as roasts, are back in the ovens.

Special buys at area stores include boneless bottom round roasts at $1.58 a pound and whole pork loins advertised at $1.38 pound. Rib-half or loin-half pork loins cost slightly more.
