NAVY BIRTHDAY CONCERT: The Hampton Roads Council of the Navy League and the Hampton Roads Military Diplomats will host the 221st Navy Birthday concert at 7:30 tonight at Willett Hall in Portsmouth. Featured will be the Atlantic Fleet Band, Country Current and Navy Steel Band. The concert is free and open to the public. Tickets are available at area chambers of commerce, the Norfolk Naval Base Tour and Information Office and Navy MWR/ITT office. For information, call 322-2857.

HELICOPTER MEET: Naval Helicopter Association Region Four will meet at 3 p.m. Friday at Breezy Point Officers Club to welcome Rear Adm. Robert T. Ziemer, newly appointed commander of Norfolk Naval Base. All association members are invited. Cost is $4 per person. For reservations, call Lt. j.g. Bill Hoyt at 444-2851.

PORTSMOUTH SHUTTLE LAUNCHED: Norfolk Naval Shipyard and Portsmouth City Hall have launched a shuttle service between Old Towne and the shipyard for military personnel, their families and guests. A trolley bus will operate from 4:30 p.m. to midnight Thursdays and Fridays and noon to midnight Saturdays and Sundays, circulating every 30 minutes.

FLEET BONE MARROW DRIVE: Atlantic Fleet is sponsoring several bone marrow drives, aimed at active-duty military, reservists, civilian fleet employees and their family members aged 18 to 60. The procedure is simple and painless, with each donor providing a small amount of blood to determine tissue type. To participate, visit the following locations: today, Fleet Training Center Norfolk, Bldg. CEP-162, ASW School, Room C-111, and the Norfolk Navy Exchange, conference room adjacent to Dry Cleaning shop; Oct. 23, aboard the carrier George Washington, Norfolk Naval Shipyard. COASTAL UNIT FORMED: Naval Coastal Warfare Group Two and Harbor Defense Unit 205 were commissioned recently at the Norfolk Naval Station, combining both Navy and Coast Guard reserve personnel to create a command for harbor defense, port security and the control of coastal seas during military emergencies. Reserve Coast Guard Capt. Theodore J. Flynn, from Duxbury, Mass., and Reserve Navy Capt. Dean L. Knuth, from Easton, Pa., head Naval Coastal Warfare Group Two. Assuming command of Harbor Defense Command Unit 205 is Reserve Coast Guard Capt. Richard E. Tinsman, from Bakerton, W. Va., and Reserve Navy Capt. Frank F. Rennie IV, from Richmond.

FORT MONROE RETIREE OPEN HOUSE: For Monroe's 12th annual military retiree day and open house will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Oct. 19 at the Fort Monroe Club. Col. Michael D. Rochelle, post commander, will deliver welcoming remarks. The event is open to all military retirees from all service branches. A luncheon will be served. Cost is $7.75 per person. DISABLED VETS HELP: The Disabled American Veterans Association will be at Janaf Shopping Center adjacent to the ABC Store from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 18 and 19 to assist veterans with medical needs and sign up new members. For more information call Earl Lennox at 853-1155.

MacARTHUR MEMORIAL EXHIBIT: ``Beginnings: Images of Occupied Japan,'' will be on exhibit at the MacArthur Memorial in the Theatre Galleries beginning Oct. 15. Thirty black and white photos, by Nicholas A. Orzio, a New York native who served in Japan as a member of the U.S. 71st Signal Battalion, will be displayed.

COMINGS AND GOINGS

ARRIVING

Approximately 200 members of the 1st Fighter Wing's 27th Fighter Squadron, along with their F-15 Eagle jets, have returned to Langley Air Force Base in Hampton from Saudi Arabia, following a 90-day deployment. The squadron left June 26, the day after the Dhahran barracks bombing. There they supported Operation Southern Watch, enforcing the United Nations sanctions against Iraq. by CNB
