JOE B. BRUMSEY

Joe Brooks Brumsey, 96, beloved father, grandfather, uncle and friend, died Oct. 7, 1996, in an Elizabeth City nursing home.

Mr. Brumsey was born Sept. 1, 1900, in Corolla and was the son of the late William and Henriette Brooks Brumsey. He was married to Susie Ferrell Brumsey for 62 years until her death in 1985. Mr. Brumsey was also predeceased by his brothers, Frank, Tom, Carl, William Brumsey II, and his sister, Elizabeth Brumsey. He graduated from Knapp School and attended North Carolina State College with his longtime family friend ``Tully'' B. Williams in 1919.

Mr. Brumsey had retired from Southland Insurance Co. after 28 years of service. For several years, later on, he listed taxes for the county and was appointed as county civil defense director, a position he held for 20 years. Other memberships include the Philmoor United Methodist Church, Currituck, Currituck Game Commission, Coinjock Masonic Lodge, York Rite Bodies and Sudan Shrine Temple, New Bern.

After his retirement, Mr. Brumsey, known to many as ``Uncle Joe,'' spent the remainder of his life on the Currituck Sound, setting his nets and crab pots until he was 83 years old.

Survivors include his daughter, Virginia Jo Horn, and her husband, Dick, of Currituck; his two grandchildren, Mike and Susanne Horn, and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service with masonic rites will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday in Hampton Cemetery, Church's Island. There will a viewing one hour prior to the service at graveside. The family will be in Mr. Brumsey's home. Oman Funeral Home, Chesapeake, is in charge.
