HASSELL L. NORTON

Cmdr. Hassell Lee ``Tweet'' Norton, U.S. Navy (ret), 75, of the 100 block of Ridgeley Point, died Oct. 8, 1996, in a Norfolk hospital.

Cmdr. Norton was a native of Fort Riley, Kan., and a resident of Norfolk since 1962. He was a World War II and Korea veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving aboard the USS Henley DD553 and was a member of the commissioning crew for the USS Norfolk DL1. He retired from the Navy while stationed in Norfolk, NATO at SACLANT. Cmdr. Norton, subsequently was employed from 1970-1976 by Blessed Sacrament Elementary School. He was a member and a former board member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, Norfolk.

Cmdr. Norton was a graduate of the New Mexico Military Institute and The U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, class of 1945, and completed post graduate school with a degree in electronical engineering. He was a member of the Retired Officers Association, member and former board member of the Ryan Club of Norfolk; member of the board of directors for the Catholic Family and Children's Services.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Helen Terhaar Norton of Norfolk; their four children and spouses, Catherine ``Cathy'' and Lennart A. Rothman and Mary Lee Norton, all of Norfolk, Rae Ann and Peter Gastoukian of Newport News, Allan Hassell and Dolores Norton of Pittsburgh, Pa.; his sister, Suzanne N. Jones of Tatum, N.M.; and eight grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

A mass of Christian burial service will be celebrated at 7 p.m. Thursday in Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church by the Fr. Julian B. Goodman. Burial will be private at Arlington National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you remember him with contributions to the American Parkinson Disease Association Inc., Staten Island, N.Y. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk, is handling the arrangements.
