FEW HARDY SOULS BRAVE JOSEPHINE

Strong, gusty winds and heavy seas caused by the passage through the area of Tropical Storm Josephine halted most fishing action along the Dare Coast on Tuesday.

Very few anglers tried fishing on Kitty Hawk, Avalon, Nags Head or Jennette's Piers. A few anglers attempted to catch fish on Outer Banks Pier, where one nice-size striped bass was hooked and lost during the morning.

A 38-pound drum was decked on Rodanthe Pier on Monday night by Russell Warren of Rodanthe. Tuesday's fishing was slow. No action was reported from Avon or Frisco piers because of rough water.

Fishing was slow in the surf from Corolla to Buxton because of bad weather and high seas, but some puppy drum were beached at Cape Point on Monday night and again Tuesday.

Boating activity was at a standstill along the Outer Banks because of the gale-force winds. The water temperature was 66.5 degrees Tuesday at the Army Corps of Engineers Pier in Duck, and 68 degrees at Frisco Pier on Hatteras Island.

The 46th Annual Nags Head Surf Fishing Club Invitational Tournament begins Thursday. Eighty 6-member teams will compete during two fishing sessions Thursday and Friday. Total points will determine the winners. Points are computed on the length of fish landed.

Team competition awards and a party will be held at George's Junction Buffet and Saloon from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday.

An Open Individual Tournament will be held Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon. Registration is at tournament headquarters, George's Junction in Nags Head, from 7 to 8 a.m. by CNB
