First, Warren Carroll cut through Catholic's defensive line. Then, the Nansemond-Suffolk running back sliced past the Crusaders' secondary and stuck his dagger through the whole Catholic team with a 77-yard touchdown run Friday night. Oh, and all this happened on the game's first play from scrimmage.
``It set the tone for the whole game,'' Saints coach Terry Crigger said after N-SA's 32-12 victory. ``And he was just that close to doing it a couple of more times.''
Nothing Carroll did the remaining 47 minutes, 40 seconds was as spectacular as the highlight-film material sprint. But then again, is rushing for 102 yards in the first quarter and 204 for the game not enough?
``At halftime, I was disappointed because I didn't use my hands like (Sidney) Hazelwood told me to,'' Carroll said of fending off blockers.
When senior tailback Hazelwood separated his shoulder against Richmond Collegiate three weeks ago, Carroll had already been a productive part of the offensive. He opened the season with scoring runs of 45 and 92 yards against Windsor. But with Hazelwood - expecting to return Saturday against Norfolk Academy - on the sidelines, Carroll has accepted the challenge of being N-SA's ``main man.''
``Before the game started, I had a talk with the offensive line and they said they would block hard and all I had to do was run hard,'' said the sophomore sensation who's gained 442 yards in the last three games.
``We were pumped up,'' lineman C.T. Harry said. ``We were ready to go.''
And Carroll wasted little time getting going, reaching the century mark for the fourth time in five games. by CNB
