A LESSON IN THE ``L'' WORD

It has become an accepted practice in the last 12 or more years to apply the word ``liberal'' to almost anything that want-to-be conservatives do not like or agree. The media is one of the most frequent victims.

Commercial television is liberal because, unlike C-SPAN, it does not dedicate every moment of its broadcast time to so-called conservative issues. Talk radio is conservative because professional entertainers play to so-called ``right-wing'' callers. Newspapers and magazines are liberal because they do not place conservative articles on the front page.

Most of the media earns its living from sensationalism. The minute any of the presidential candidates stumble, we will hear about it. President Clinton and Mr. Dole will be roasted equally when the opportunity presents itself. Senator Warner will liberally bring home the bacon, be it John or Mark. Owen Pickett and Norman Sisisky have been very conservative when we want them to be.

The media is neither liberal nor conservative.
