Pier fishing along the northern beaches improved Wednesday as winds decreased and seas fell.
Kitty Hawk Pier reported a few spot and several 2-pound pompano landed during the morning, and plenty of spot and croaker taken throughout the afternoon.
A few spot and black drum were caught during the day on Avalon Pier.
Fishing was slow on Nags Head Pier, with only a few speckled trout taken.
Fishermen on Jennette's Pier landed a mixture of spot, croaker, puppy drum and small speckled trout off and on during the day.
Spot fishing was good on Outer Banks Pier, with fish weighing as much as 1 pound. Some speckled trout also were landed on green plastic lures. The best action was in the afternoon.
On Hatteras Island, Rodanthe Pier reported plenty of nice spot, some scattered puppy drum and bluefish taken throughout the day.
Anglers on Avon Pier caught a 27 1/2-pound drum, all types of bottom fish and lots of small bluefish.
Fishing was slow on Frisco Pier, with a few croaker, small bluefish and puppy drum decked.
Surf fishermen caught a mixture of small bottom fish, a few bluefish and an occasional puppy drum Wednesday from Corolla to Oregon Inlet. Some speckled trout were taken on cut bait off the Village of Nags Head.
A few bottom fish, bluefish, black drum and small trout were beached around Oregon Inlet.
Plenty of croaker, some spot, small bluefish, and a few puppy drum were taken by surfcasters from Rodanthe to Buxton. A 35-pound drum was landed, and three were lost between ramps 23 and 27.
A 41-inch drum was caught at Cape Point on Wednesday morning. Some puppy drum were landed by the lighthouse, and small spot and large croaker were taken along the south beach.
A few speckled trout were taken by anglers on the sound side of Hatteras Inlet. Scattered puppy drum, small bluefish and flounder were beached along the inlet's ocean side.
No boating activity was reported Wednesday in the Oregon Inlet or Hatteras areas, but fishing should resume today.
The water temperature was 66 degrees Wednesday at the Army Corps of Engineers Pier in Duck, and 70 degrees at Frisco Pier on Hatteras Island. by CNB
