In hand is a 54-page paperback cookbook, ``Eats and Treats for Pets and Their People,'' edited by Patti Moran of Pet Sitters International. Its headquarters are at 418 King St. in King, N.C.
What a relief for me to learn that the recipes differ for the pets and people, although it would come as a shock to Boomer the Lab, who thinks he has dibs on anything I eat.
Used to be dogs fed on table scraps. I saw the sale of the first cans of dog food by a salesman who dropped by the A&P store. The store manager, Mr. Breedlove, was dubious about stocking canned dog food. ``People are picky about what their dogs eat,'' he said.
``Just get me a spoon, a bottle dope, and crackers, preferably Saltines,'' the salesman dared him.
People bustled in to watch as word spread among the eight or so stores at the end of the street car line.
He ate it all - and keeled over. ``Trouble was,'' he said, when revived, ``I ate two cans in other stores just before I got here. A Great Dane couldn't digest three cans of dog food, hand-running.''
Mr. Breedlove ordered a stack.
Thirty recipes are in ``Eats and Treats,'' split between pets and people. One for dogs is Rovers Roll Overs of whole wheat flour, corn meal, yeast powder with garlic, salt, egg yolks bouillon cubes.
A feline restricted-protein diet is a blend of beef liver, hard-boiled eggs, cooked rice, vegetable oil and a couple of spices.
Pet Sitters provided the home-tested recipes. The book, which retails for $7.95, is on sale through Dec. 15 for $6.50. The telephone number in King, N.C., near Winston Salem, is (901) 983-9222.
In 1983 Patti began a pet-sitting business in Winston-Salem, wrote a book about it to help launch others, and led in organizing the International 10 years later. The International aids them in getting bonded and insured and offers a quarterly magazine. Its annual convention was in Williamsburg last month. Membership is 1,457 - 76 being in Virginia.
While we are talking about dogs, let me remind you that the annual greyhounds picnic will take place Sunday at Woodstock Park on Providence Road in Virginia Beach from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
As a result of last year's outing, which drew 102 greyhounds, 15 found homes through the national adoption agency.
During its racing days, a greyhound is among the most mistreated of animals, quartered in a crate with only space in which to lie down, get up, turn around and lie down. When it can no longer win, the greyhound is slated for execution, unless adopted.
When embraced amid loving owners, it is among the gentlest, most lovable beings. Which is why greyhound owners want to find homes for others. See for yourself. ILLUSTRATION: ROVERS ROLL OVERS
