The East Coast's premier boys soccer event commences today at 10 sites as 5,500 participants gather for the 13th annual Columbus Day weekend tournament.
Action begins at 8 a.m. at Princess Anne Park, Brill Field, Lake Taylor High School, Cape Henry Collegiate, Salem Middle School, Lynnhaven Middle School, Red Wing Park, Rosemont Park and the Chesapeake and Virginia Beach campuses of Tidewater Community College.
The two-day tournament features 340 teams from 13 states and Canada, and includes every youth state champion team on the eastern seaboard.
The event, which has filled an estimated 8,000 hotel rooms, is expected to generate more than $2 million in visitor revenue for Norfolk, Virginia Beach and Chesapeake.
Highlighting today's tournament are U-14 matches at Red Wing Park featuring four Canadian teams. A U-19 matchup between 1995 tournament finalists Braddock Roads and Vista Blackwater is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. before the ODU-Maryland game at the ODU Soccer Stadium. by CNB
