Chief Earl ``Running Deer'' Bass, 87, of the 3400 block of Galberry Road, died Saturday, Oct. 12, 1996, in his residence.
A native of Chesapeake, he was the son of the late Jesse L. and Carrie Anderson Bass and was the widower of Lucille E. Bass. He was retired as a machinist in Shop 31 of the Norfolk Naval Shipyard after 31 years and was a retired farmer. He was a member of Indiana United Methodist Church, Lake Drummond Masonic Lodge (NU)178, Portsmouth Scottish Rite Bodies, Khedive Shrine Temple, Woodman of the World and president of Yadkin Hunt Club in Chesapeake. He had been chief of the Nansemond Indian Tribe since 1960.
Survivors include four daughters, Clara Land of Portsmouth, Peggy Hatton of Swell, N.J., Carrie Collins of Mobile, Ala., and Sandra Garner of Chesapeake; two sons, Joe Bass and Bobby Bass, both of Chesapeake; a sister, Gladys Passmore of Fort Mill, N.C.; a brother, Leonard Bass of Roanoke; 14 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Indiana United Methodist Church by the Rev. Larry Brinkley. Burial will be in the Bass Family Cemetery in Chesapeake. The family will receive friends at Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, from 7 to 9 p.m. today. Memorials may be made to the Nansemond Indian Tribal Association, P.O.
