JOHN P. VANDERHEIDEN

John Phillip VanderHeiden, 67, of the 3600 block of Kings Point Road, died with dignity in his home after a long illness.

He was a retired master chief in the U.S. Navy with 20 years of service aboard surface craft and conventional submarines. After retirement, he owned and operated Van's Texaco, Witchduck Road and Aragona Boulevard. He later worked for many years as a real estate agent and broker and was a member of the Million Dollar Club in 1976. Born in Lakeport, N.H., he was the son of the late Antoon G. and Josephine VanderHeiden. He was predeceased by two brothers, Stanley and Alvin.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Arlene Emery VanderHeiden; three sons, John T. VanderHeiden and his wife, Melanie, of Virginia Beach, Robert D. VanderHeiden and his wife, Donna, of Portsmouth and Thomas W. VanderHeiden and his wife, Deborah, of Virginia Beach; one daughter, Debra R. Delhommer and her husband, Rodney, of Avondale, La.; six grandchildren, John T. VanderHeiden II, Kevin R. Coleman, Amber M. Delhommer, Paul S. Cohen VanderHeiden, Michael E. VanderHeiden and Jamie M. VanderHeiden.

Friends may join the family for a graveside service with military honors at Colonial Grove Memorial Park on Tuesday at 9 a.m. with Chaplain Bob Evans, USN, officiating. The family asked that memorial donations be made to the Sentara Hospice or to Plaza Rescue Squad. Altmeyer Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
