WEEKEND FISHING

While most anglers have found slim pickings along the coasts of Virginia and North Carolina recently, there have been a few exceptions.

For one thing, a smattering of big speckled trout have been showing between the Eastern Shore and Nags Head, including on the Poquoson Flats.

For another, several anglers reported good catches of yellowfin tuna off Oregon Inlet, near Nags Head, while big king mackerel made a strong showing Sunday off Hatteras.

Melody Gregory of Suffolk had perhaps the week's most outstanding catch. She pulled a 7-pound, 2-ounce largemouth from the waters of Western Branch Reservoir on a weekend when bass were scarce.
