An explosive device blew the door off a car's gas tank in East Ocean View late Monday night, police said. No one was injured.
Residents of the 9500 block of 8th Bay St. reported hearing the explosion, but police and firefighters found no signs of a blast in the area Monday night, said Jack Goldhorn, public information officer for Norfolk Fire and Paramedical Services.
Investigators found the site of the explosion on Tuesday afternoon after a resident of the block called them about a damaged gas tank on his car.
Initially, the resident thought vandals had knocked off the door to his gas tank, Goldhorn said. But after hearing about the explosion from neighbors, the man called arson investigators.
The explosive, mounted near the car's gas tank, caused about $75 in damage, Goldhorn said.
Investigators have not determined what type of explosive device was used. The investigation is ongoing.
