If you've indulged yourself with short sleeves and open windows over the last few days, today will bring a rude reminder that summer is over and winter is near.
First you'll get wet. Then cold.
A powerful cold front was sweeping toward the coast overnight, threatening to bring drenching downpours, gusty winds and thunderstorms as it passes.
And while skies will calm with its passage, the National Weather Service said Friday that the mercury will plunge.
``In some instances, the temperature will fall 20 degrees in less than one hour,'' the Weather Service office in Washington said.
The high temperature Friday at the National Weather Service office at Norfolk International Airport was a balmy 79 - 10 degrees above normal for this time of year. By tonight, the mercury should be down near 50 as a high pressure system builds into the region.
Here is the Hampton Roads and vicinity forecast:
Today and tonight: Variable cloudiness and breezy with scattered showers. The high should be in the mid 50s with the overnight low near 50 with winds northwest at 15 to 25 mph. The chance of rain is 40 percent.
Sunday: Mostly cloudy with more rain possible in the morning. The high will be in the upper 50s with the low in the upper 40s. The chance of rain is 50 percent. by CNB
