Anne Brinson Nelson, 71, of 7336 Elvin Court died Oct. 17, 1996, at a local hospital.
Mrs. Nelson was a native of Norfolk and was the daughter of the late Wilbur and Grace Brinson. She was a graduate of Sweet Briar College and received a master's degree in social work from Virginia Commonwealth University. She was a social worker with Norfolk Child and Family Services and retired from the American Red Cross, where she was director of department services to military families and had served as acting director of the Tidewater Chapter of the American Red Cross and First Colonies Division.
She was a former president of Norfolk Urban Outreach Ministry, vice president of Urban Ministry, Housing Development and served on the board of directors for the Tucker House. She was a member of the Church of the Ascension, and had formerly served on the vestry.
She is survived by her husband, James L. Nelson; a sister, Mary Jane Bowers of Norfolk; a sister-in-law, Mary Sue Pennington of Columbia, Tenn.; three sons, James Nelson and his wife Pam of Madison, Va., John ``Jack'' Nelson, William ``Bill'' Nelson; and a daughter, Martha Nelson, all of Norfolk; three grandchildren, Baker Nelson of Norfolk and Lee and Sarah Nelson of Madison, Va.
A funeral service will be conducted Sunday at 3 p.m. in the Church of the Ascension by the Rev. Mark Delcuze with interment following in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends at H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments, Norfolk Chapel, from 7 to 8 p.m. on Saturday evening. Memorial contributions may be made to the Church of the Ascension or the American Red Cross.
