VOLLEYBALL STANDOUT DISPLAYS VISIBLE `SIGN' OF ARTISTIC TALENT

Jennifer Burns unveiled her senior sign Wednesday to a crowd of screaming Indian River students.

The senior volleyball standout was displaying her second loves - drawing and painting - to cap an hour-long pep rally celebrating the Braves' homecoming on Friday night.

Burns, who has helped pace the Braves to the top of Southeastern District girls volleyball and the No. 2 team in South Hampton Roads, was selected to create the sign after she and Marie Bersamin penned the design last year. The Class of 1997 voted on a selection of drawings and chose theirs.

Two months ago, Burns started working on drawing and painting the depiction of a lady and male Brave.

``We wanted to keep the girl Brave in the sign,'' Burns said. ``This year, we decided to put her in front.''

Burns began taking art classes in middle school, but this is her biggest project to date.

``I'm happy with it,'' she said.

The sign will be hung at the school until next year's homecoming. It was crafted in hues of blue and brown and incorporates Burns' other ``true love'' - volleyball. The male Brave has a volleyball tattoo on his back.

``That's my trademark,'' Burns said with a smile. ``I had to put that on there somewhere, it was just a matter of where. It's in the middle. It's the focus, but it doesn't stand out too much.'' ILLUSTRATION: Photo by GARY C. KNAPP
