EDWARD A. WAYNO SR.

Edward A. Wayno Sr., after 71 years of life, met our Lord on Oct. 18, 1996, after his courageous battle with lung cancer in the Portsmouth Naval Hospital.

Born in Larksville, Pa., Mr. Wayno, a Catholic, was the son of the late Frank and Anna Wayno. He was a chief petty officer in the U.S. Navy, retiring after 32 years of service. He was a World War II vet. His special duties included the World War II blimp squadron, career counselor, leadership field teams and active duty aboard the USS Norfolk (DL-1). Mr. Wayno also retired from the U.S. Naval Exchange systems in 1978.

His beloved survivors include his loving wife of 50 years, Elizabeth Gwynn Wayno; a son, Edward A. Wayno Jr. of Smithfield and his wife, Lucy; two daughters, Frances W. Thompson of Portsmouth and her husband, Ronald, and Paula W. Williams of Portsmouth, and her husband, Todd; a sister, Anna Gaiteri of Comillua, N.Y.; four brothers, Frank J. Wayno Sr. of North Syracuse, N.Y., Michael J. Wayno of Salem, Mass., Joseph Wayno of Edenton, N.C., and William A. Wayno Sr. of Central Square, N.Y. Nine grandchildren were the light of his life: Carrie, Teddy and Daniel Wayno, Ronnie, Andy, Emily and Julie Thompson, Will Morris and Corrie Kimball; and two great-grandchildren, Eric and Kristen Kimball. A host of family and friends will greatly miss him.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 21, 1996, in North End Baptist Church with the Rev. Harry Vanderford officiating. Interment will be in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. The family will receive friends at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel, today from 7 to 8:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to North End Baptist Church, 133 Woodview Ave., Norfolk, Va. 23505 or personal choice.
