Here are some tips on wire-line trolling for striped bass along the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel, passed along by Kenny Taylor of Virginia Beach, perhaps the region's top wire-line fisherman:
When trolling along the tunnel sections, start at the shallow end, near the island, and work out to the middle of the channel. The water will deepen as you go. Turn around, run back to the island, and start all over again.
Keep the reel out of gear, with your thumb on the spool. You'll have to let out some line constantly as the water deepens.
You don't want the 12-ounce sinker, trailing a bucktail back 20 feet, to drag across the bottom. You want it to bounce along the bottom.
Perhaps most important, don't get so far over the center of the tunnel that you lose sight of the side of the brick building on the island. If you can only see the end of the building facing you and none of the side, you're too close. The lure is being dragged behind the fish, which are feeding into the tide.
