LITERARY NOTES

Susan Ackerman will sign copies of The Flying Pie and Other Stories, her book of stories from the Mennonite community in Newport News, today from 2 to 3 p.m. at Barnes & Noble, 1212 Greenbrier Parkway, Chesapeake. Call 382-0220.

Roger A Caras, Ernest B. Furgurson and Lisa Scottoline will be the guest authors at the Junior League of Hampton Roads' fourth annual Book and Author Dinner, set for Nov. 11 at the Holiday Inn Hampton Coliseum. A cash bar and book sale will be held at 6 p.m., with dinner at 7 p.m., followed by an autographing session.

Books featured during the program will be Caras' A Perfect Harmony: The Intertwining Lives of Animals and Humans Throughout History, Furgurson's Ashes of Glory: Richmond at War and Legal Tender by Scottoline.

Mike D'Orso's Like Judgment Day, about the destruction of a black community in Florida, has been selected to receive the 1996 Lillian Smith Book Award, sponsored by the Southern Regional Council in Atlanta. The award recognizes authors whose work extends the legacy of Lillian Smith, an outspoken writer, educator and advocate of racial justice. by CNB
