``Ink''
Network, time: CBS, Monday at 8:30 p.m.
Cast: Ted Danson, Mary Steenburgen, Charlie Robinson, Saul Rubinek, Christine Ebersol, Alana Austin and Janica Bergere.
Plotline: Danson and Steenburgen play a divorced couple working together at a big-city newspaper (New York Sun) whose young publisher makes the Steenburgen character boss of the newsroom, and that includes columnist Mike Logan (Danson). CBS brought in Diane English of ``Murphy Brown'' to give the show a 90 percent makeover after the first four episodes fell flat and never aired.
Mini-review: Based on the first pilot, Steenburgen is terrific as newsroom whip. There's a bit of Mary Tyler Moore in her as the sexy, smart and strong sparring partner for Danson. He's still Sam Malone of ``Cheers,'' only older. Nothing wrong with that. Man and wife in real life, Danson and Steenburgen also have on-screen chemistry. She's the next big TV star. Original pilot had a 1940s' ``Front Page'' look. Now it's a mod newsroom. ** 1/2 (out of a possible five) based on early tapes. CBS did not make revised show available for review in time for deadline. ILLUSTRATION: CBS
