MACARTHUR CENTER CONSTRUCTION MOVES ALONG NEXT MONTH, SMA TOWER AND FIRE STATION ON CITY HALL AVENUE WILL BE DEMOLISHED

ILLUSTRATION: Update: The land that will become the MacArthur Center

mall in downtown Norfolk has been undergoing site-preparation work

for the last few months, including clearing half of a parking

garage. Next up in November: demolishing the SMA tower, just right

of center in above photo, on Monticello Avenue and the City Hall

Avenue fire station, upper-right corner of the mall site. This

aerial view, photographed late last week, shows the Elizabeth River

and Berkley Bridge, at right, to the south; north is toward the

left. The land has stood largely vacant since it was cleared during

urban-renewal programs in the late 1950s. In left photo, new water,

sewer and storm-drain lines are placed in preparation for the mall,

slowing traffic around Monticello Avenue. The mall is scheduled to

open in autumn 1998.
